Loperamide hydrochloride, sold under the brand names Imodium, Norimode, is an antidiarrhoeal: it slows gut motility.
Loperamide hydrochloride is an antidiarrhoeal, used for acute or chronic diarrhoea. UK prescribing centres on loperamide (Imodium), with bismuth subsalicylate as an alternative. Mechanism for loperamide is mu-opioid receptor activation at the intestinal myenteric plexus, which slows peristalsis without significant CNS effect at the doses on the OTC label. The supplement surface is small because loperamide has limited systemic absorption. The clinically important note is that loperamide misuse at high doses (well above OTC limits) has caused cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death. The MHRA has flagged this. The BNF lists it. At standard dose, loperamide is among the safer OTC medicines. Probiotic supplementation alongside antidiarrhoeal use sits in a complementary rather than interacting space. The strain-specific evidence for diarrhoea reduction is modest but real.
