Docusate sodium, sold under the brand names DulcoEase, Norgalax, is a laxative.
Docusate sodium is a laxative. The class divides four ways. Bulk-forming agents (psyllium, methylcellulose). Osmotic agents (macrogol, lactulose, and the magnesium salts). Stimulants (senna, bisacodyl). And stool softeners (docusate). UK community prescribing is dominated by macrogol (Movicol) for chronic constipation. The others are used contextually. The supplement surface lies mostly in absorption. Bulk-forming and osmotic laxatives can reduce absorption of other oral medicines taken at the same time. The four hour separation rule applies to medicines with a narrow therapeutic window (levothyroxine, warfarin, lithium, digoxin). Magnesium laxatives at OTC doses can contribute to total daily magnesium intake, in a way that interacts with the magnesium glycinate supplement separately. The absorption of magnesium oxide (laxative form) and magnesium bisglycinate (supplement form) is very different. Stimulant laxatives can shift electrolytes with prolonged use.
